Floral Resources Enhance Fecundity, but Not Flight Activity, in a Specialized Aphid Predator, Hippodamia convergens (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)

چکیده
Adult aphid predators disperse across the landscape seasonally in search of prey aggregations that are patchily distributed and temporally variable. However, flight is energetically costly consumes resources could be invested reproduction. Hippodamia convergens an important predator North American cereal crops other agricultural systems. Consumption floral can enhance adult survival during periods low availability may improve reproductive success. We tested how omnivorous diet containing (diluted honey pulverized bee pollen) interacts with body size to influence reproduction behavior compared a prey-only diet. Two sizes beetles were produced by controlling larval access food—3 h daily small beetles; ad libitum large faster development. Reproductive performance was tracked for 18 days, female activity assayed via 3 bouts tethered flight. Diet composition interacted preoviposition period, females treatments delaying oviposition longest. The improved 18-day fecundity relative diet, but egg fertility unaffected. affected pattern, laying smaller, more numerous, clutches. Females flew up 7 km 6 h, neither nor influenced distance, suggesting all generated energy reserves sufficient power flights short duration. pre-reproductive > 60% further than they did post-reproduction, likely due energetic costs oviposition. Thus, pollen nectar increased success altered patterns H. , indicating importance conservation this its biological control services.

Pirimicarb, an aphid selective insecticide, adversely affects demographic parameters of the aphid predator Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)
Demographic toxicology is recommended for toxicity determination of the long term effects of a pesticide since it gives a more accurate and efficient measure of the effect of a pesticide. Thus, in the current study the sublethal effects of pirimicarb (carbamate insecticide) two concentrations of LC30 and LC10 were used against third instar larvae of Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) in order to dete...

The convergent lady beetle (CLB), Hippodamia convergens (Guérin-Méneville), a species widely distributed and used in biological control, has exhibited high survival under field and laboratory conditions when treated with field rates of the pyrethroid k-cyhalothrin, a highly unusual phenomenon for a natural enemy. This work investigated and characterized the phenomenon of pyrethroid resistance i...
متن کاملA Comprehensive Selection of Reference Genes for RT-qPCR Analysis in a Predatory Lady Beetle, Hippodamia convergens (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)
Reverse transcriptase-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is a reliable, rapid, and reproducible technique for measuring and evaluating changes in gene expression. To facilitate gene expression studies and obtain more accurate RT-qPCR data, normalization relative to stable reference genes is required. In this study, expression profiles of seven candidate reference genes, including ...

The nutritive value of two cereal aphid species, Schizaphis graminum and Rhopalosiphum padi, for Hippodamia convergens development was compared as pureand mixed-species diets and as suboptimum and ad libitum quantities. Comparisons were based on the following daily aphid quantities and combinations: 4 mg R. padi, 4 mg S. graminum, 3:1 mg mixture of R. padi and S. graminum, 2:2 mg mixture of R. ...
متن کاملDeterminants of acute mortality of Hippodamia convergens (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) to ultra-low volume permethrin used for mosquito management
There are relatively few experimental studies and risk assessments of the effects on non-target insects from ultra-low volume (ULV) insecticides used for management of adult mosquitoes. Therefore, we evaluated factors that may influence the ability of an insect to intercept the insecticide at the time of application by using Hippodamia convergens (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in field bioassay ex...
